A place like no other, Vigan, you are extraordinarily timeless and beautiful. Iāve been living here in Vigan for years yet I still feel the exciting rush of what this city has brought to BigueƱoes. And every BigueƱoes, celebrates for its cityhood. The declaration of Republic Act No 9411 for every 22nd of January as a special non-working holiday signed by the former President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, had become not just a simple celebration. But a remarkable event of Vigan.
Letās take a look back at the history of Vigan! Despite Vigan remaining timeless for its structure, it is important to also acknowledge the changes that have been made. Long before this city evolved, it was formerly called āVilla Fernandina de Viganā. Captain Juan de Salcedo arrived at Vigan on June 12, 1572 as Governor General Guido de Lavezares sent him and he christened the place āVilla Fernandina de Viganā in honor of King Philip IIās late son, Prince Ferdinand.
As the Spanish colonized us, our town was designed similarly to their urban planning principles highlighting a grid layout as inscribed on Ley de Indiasālaws governing Spanish colonial territories. Well, Letās leap into the 1750s!
In 1755, Don Juan de la Fuente de Yepes, upon becoming the Bishop of Nueva Segovia, sought the approval of both the King of Spain and the Pope to relocate the Diocese from Lallo, Cagayan to Vigan due to Lallo's declining conditions as floods became threatening. This request was granted during the papacy of Pope Benedict XIV and under the reign of King Fernando VI of Spain, culminating in a Royal Decree issued on September 7, 1758. This decree not only sanctioned the transfer but also elevated Vigan's status to Ciudad Fernandina de Vigan in honor of King Fernando VI.
A lot of things have happened. Time has left us with history to charm and share. In celebrating our one of a kind heritage, we also embrace the future. As a BigueƱo, I find immense pride in our city, especially as we commemorate the establishment of our cityhood every January 22, a day that resonates deeply with the spirit of unity and celebration among all BigueƱoes.
